BBC FIRST NIGHT OF THE PROMS

Client: BBC Red Button Music

BBC Red Button broadcast additional content to the BBC Two coverage of the First Night of The Proms. The concept was to use BBC Radio 3 Breakfast Presenter Sara Mohr-Pietsch to guide the viewers through the musical pieces with added information and to engage the audience in a two-way on-screen dialogue about what the First Night means to them.

As Red Button host for the evening Sara curated and enhanced the broadcast by "Tweeting" over the top of the BBC Two coverage.

Sara’s focus was to start conversations during different parts of the programme including:-

Already a key part of the Red Button Music Festival team with many years of work on Glastonbury, Reading and Radio 1 Big Weekend Festivals, Cloudbass were employed to provide all Red Button graphics for the First Night, which included standard lower third name supers and messages using their Liveboard graphics generator. In addition BBC Music Producer Michael Gray realised how graphics could impactfully broadcast all Tweets selected for airing in a simple to execute production process from monitoring and editing to broadcasting using the Cloudbass CloudCast application.

All of Sara’s factoids about the music were tweeted live in real-time on her Twitter page and immediately broadcast on the Red Button by the Producer simply selecting the tweets from the Cloudbass Application to broadcast as either lower thirds or crawling messages.

Michael Gray, BBC Red Button Producer stated;

"This was a bold and ground breaking move to use social media to provide TV commentary to the first night of the world’s greatest classical music festival. Sara Mohr-Pietsch and Cloudbass Graphics’ in-depth experience made it an intelligent, sensitive and engaging proposition. The Cloudbass CloudCast application was easy to use and allowed us to react in seconds to the commentary from Sara and the audience participation."

The BBC Producer also selected relevant and interesting tweets from the public on their thoughts about the First Night and displayed these as a crawl over the BBC Two Proms pictures.

As well as sourcing Tweets from the general public a number of well known musical figures Tweeted their views and opinions on the First Night of The Proms, which were broadcast on the Red Button. These included Gareth Malone and Petroc Trelawny.

Speaking of the BBC Red Button coverage of the First Night Of The Proms Steve Bowbrick, Interactive Editor, BBC Radio 3 said;
