Client: ESPNi

For the last 2 years we have been covering the Wimbledon Championships for ESPNi.

A production crew is flown over from the US and we base ourselves at Media House IMG just off the Hogarth roundabout, London.

We use a Trio One Box which is rigged in the engineering bay and are on air from the first serve of the day to the last point of the day on a selection of courts and stream live tennis back to the USA on six channels.

There are two rig and rehearse days prior to the live event where the main graphics build takes place. This involves preparing name supers and statistics for studio presenters and guests, typing up court locations and court commentators and building biographical information on the main seeds. Once the Order of Play is finalised for each day we offer it for Centre Court, No. 1 Court, No. 2 Court and the other show courts or those that we will be covering.

During each day most of what we offer is automated and with the simple few clicks of a button we are able to offer up results when they happen. There is also an automated graphics tree which shows the progress of each day’s winners, from the top half of the draw right through to the bottom half. Through the network we can access graphics produced on site at Wimbledon and use them in our live transmissions. We also have all the templates used for ESPNi tennis and can therefore build our own independent graphics as required.

It’s a long week in terms of a graphics operation but when the strawberries and cream comes round, it makes it all worth while.
